The Art of Memory Encountered in Eulsukdo, 《Collection Island_ Choe Chan-suk: Mitchina》
The Busan Museum of Contemporary Art will hold the exhibition 《Collection Island_ Choe Chan-suk: Mitchina》 as a permanent collection exhibition in the first half of 2025, which will run until June 29 in Eulsukdo, Busan.
The name ‘Collection Island’ reflects the geographical characteristics of the island where the museum is located, establishing itself as a series of planned exhibitions that introduce various collection works of the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art in depth to the public.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of liberation, this exhibition is organized around the theme of 'historical events and social issues', featuring various works centered on Choe Chan-suk's video installation work
: An Artistic Gaze for ‘Unremembered Women’
The exhibited work
This work is composed through three fictional female characters named ‘Mitchina’, revealing the complexities of various political stances and narratives regarding Japanese imperialism, patriarchal nationalism within Korea, and feminism through the perspectives of each character.
The work demands deep contemplation from the audience and carries a significant message linking historical pain to contemporary society.
The artist raises the question of whether a singular truth can exist in situations where historical memories are distorted or conflict with one another. He delicately explores the complexities of memory, record, and testimony.
In the exhibition space, actual historical materials provided by Professor Jeong Jin-sung's research team at Seoul National University are also displayed, assisting visitors to immerse themselves more deeply and reflect.
Online Dialogue with the Artist
On April 18th (Friday) at 5 PM, a special online program will be held. This event is a ‘Dialogue with the Artist’ and will take place on the Zoom platform.
The protagonist of this dialogue is artist Choe Chan-suk, who is currently active in Berlin, Germany. Citizens can apply in advance for this event through the Busan Integrated Reservation System (reserve.busan.go.kr).
Participants will have a valuable opportunity for in-depth discussions not only about the work's message but also about the artist's creative process and philosophy of media art through direct communication with Choe Chan-suk.
Artist Choe Chan-suk Practicing Art at the ‘Border’
Choe Chan-suk is a media artist who has been working on the themes of ‘migration’ and ‘borders’ back and forth between Korea and Germany since 2013.
She actively engages in work that visually interprets social minorities, communities, and identity issues through various forms of experimentation including exhibitions, lecture performances, and publications.
In 2021, she won the Artist of the Year award at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and has been showcasing her work through exhibitions at major art institutions both domestically and internationally.
Through these activities, Choe Chan-suk appears to expand her existential inquiries with a multidisciplinary methodology.
