Australia Family Trip in January: 10 Nights, 12 Days and Hotels | Brisbane, Gold Coast & Sydney for 5

Preparing for a January family trip to Australia

An introduction to preparing for a January family trip to Australia and a 10-night, 12-day itinerary for five

In January 2027, we plan to take a family trip to Australia in the middle of summer. This itinerary is for a 10-night, 12-day trip with five people: four adults and one child.

Unlike Korea, Australia is in summer in January. Brisbane and the Gold Coast can be hot and humid, while Sydney is also in a good season for enjoying beaches and outdoor attractions. Allowing plenty of breaks for the midday heat and strong sun can make the itinerary more comfortable with a child.

An overview of an itinerary with 3 nights each in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Sydney

The destinations are 3 nights in Brisbane, 3 nights on the Gold Coast, and 3 nights in Sydney. That makes 9 nights of local accommodation, and the full trip is 10 nights and 12 days including a night spent in transit on the international flights.

Since we are traveling with a child, we focused on avoiding frequent moves. We looked primarily at two-bedroom apartment hotels with kitchens and laundry facilities so we can prepare meals and do laundry.

Brisbane–Gold Coast–Sydney itinerary

We will depart from Busan, travel via Incheon, and arrive in Brisbane, then return from Sydney on an open-jaw flight itinerary. Using different arrival and departure cities can reduce backtracking.

We plan to use public transport from Brisbane to the Gold Coast and take a domestic flight from the Gold Coast to Sydney. Splitting up the transport between cities helps reduce the burden of long-distance travel.

At first, we considered a long-distance road trip with a rental car, but to avoid spending so much time in the car with a child, we changed our plan to fly from the Gold Coast to Sydney.

We are looking into Virgin Australia flight VA518 from the Gold Coast to Sydney on January 11. The scheduled departure time is 11:20 a.m., and the Choice fare includes 23kg of checked baggage per person. The flight has not been booked or paid for yet, so we plan to recheck the schedule and fare conditions before booking.

Hotel recommendations in Australia for a family of five

The first thing to check when choosing a hotel for a family of five is the room's maximum occupancy. Some standard rooms accommodate only 2–3 people, so depending on the family, you may need to book two rooms.

For this trip, we prioritized apartment hotels with two bedrooms, a kitchen, laundry facilities, and a living room. They are practical for family travel because we can prepare simple meals and do laundry in the room.

Brisbane – Mantra South Bank Brisbane

Gold Coast – Mantra Crown Towers

A family-friendly resort close to Surfers Paradise Beach. We chose it with its lagoon pool, children's waterslide, and indoor pool in mind. We are looking forward not only to busy sightseeing days but also to relaxing while swimming with our child at the accommodation.

만트라 크라운 타워스 : Unit 5/19 Palm Ave, Surfers Paradise QLD 4217 오스트레일리아

Sydney – Mantra 2 Bond Street

An introduction to Sydney accommodation at Mantra 2 Bond Street

An apartment hotel convenient for getting to Circular Quay and around central Sydney. We chose a two-bedroom room with a kitchen and laundry facilities; the accommodation costs approximately 907,000 won. We booked under conditions that allow payment and cancellation at the property.

만트라 2 본드 스트리트 : Cnr George St, And, Bond St, Sydney NSW 2000 오스트레일리아

All three accommodations were booked without breakfast included.

However, even a two-bedroom room does not automatically have an occupancy limit of five. At the booking stage, it is important to check with the accommodation whether four adults and one child can stay, how the beds are arranged, and whether extra bedding is available.

Australia family trip costs and packing list

Occupancy and room conditions to check when booking accommodation for an Australia family trip

January in Australia coincides with the summer holiday season, so flights and accommodation can make up a large part of the budget. Once your travel dates are set, it is a good idea to compare prices and booking conditions in advance.

The Brisbane and Sydney accommodation costs we have checked so far total approximately 1,905,000 won. The cost of three nights on the Gold Coast, international and domestic airfare, meals, and sightseeing will be added.

Estimated costs and summer packing tips for a family trip to Australia

For the domestic flight from the Gold Coast to Sydney, we are considering an estimated range of approximately 900,000–1,000,000 won for five people. This is an amount currently under consideration, and the actual cost may vary depending on exchange rates and booking dates.

Before departure, we also need to check the visa requirements and application process for entry into Australia, and prepare travel insurance, a SIM or eSIM, and airport transfers.

In January, it is a good idea to pack sunscreen, hats, and swimwear to protect against the sun and UV rays. A light layer for indoor air conditioning is also useful.

Summary of a three-city trip in Australia

A family trip itinerary covering Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Sydney

This itinerary focuses on experiencing the distinct atmospheres of Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Sydney in sequence.

We plan to focus on animals and nature in Brisbane, beaches and resorts on the Gold Coast, and major attractions in Sydney.

For a family of five, room configuration and ease of getting around are just as important as accommodation costs. An apartment hotel with a kitchen makes it easy to prepare simple meals and may also help maintain a child's routine.

The itinerary for a three-city Australia trip and the remaining booking preparations

Dividing the stay into 3 nights in Brisbane, 3 on the Gold Coast, and 3 in Sydney is our way of balancing sightseeing and relaxation.

Next, we plan to finalize the domestic flight booking and check whether each room accommodates five people as well as the booking conditions for attractions.
